Members of the construction community are invited to submit abstracts describing how YOUR project delivery was improved by superior CPM scheduling and project controls. MON14 - Avoid Out-of-Sequence Progress in Microsoft Project
Recording Actual dates that violate existing schedule logic can cause conflicts in Microsoft Project's internal schedule calculations. The resulting Total Slack
values and Critical task flags can be incorrect and misleading. These issues are aggravated by recent (e.g. MSP 2016) versions of the software, and users are advised

Many Contract Documents are now requiring the use of the latest version of Primavera software (P6™) due to its enterprise capabilities and its use of latest

Primavera’s latest release of P6™ contains many features that can assist in developing schedules quickly and efficiently. However, a new or in-experienced user

This session will focus on the presenters’ experiences and their lessons learned regarding the effective use of P6 ™ in the schedule development process as they

MON22 - Schedule Acceleration Techniques
Projects often run late, either due to work variances or predictions of future risk events’ impact. In both cases, in order to meet commitments the schedule must
be “crashed” in an attempt to accelerate remaining work to recover from delays.
Traditionally, project acceleration is an arduous trial and error process, with the team accepting the first version of a modified plan that meets the target dates.
Often, this “crashing” process causes significant collateral damage to the schedule in terms of unrealistic expectations of concurrent work, significant reductions
in float, and overworked team members. During this session, we will review commonly utilized methods for crashing schedules, their strengths and weaknesses, and

MON24 - Really Understanding Microsoft Project
Love it or hate it, Microsoft Project (MSP) CPM scheduling software is here to stay. Many construction contracts are now mandating its use. Most people using MSP on
construction projects find that MSP is fine for planning the work but very difficult to use when maintaining the status and accurately forecasting project completion.
MSP can be made to properly reflect complicated status including out-of-sequence progress resembling Retained Logic. This advanced presentation will explain how to
best use MSP in place of P6 or other more status-oriented scheduling software.

This presentation reviews the unique methods and tools for CPM schedule analysis and optimization available in the Spider Project software. These include calculation

Construction projects are fraught with disputes and litigation, especially loss of productivity disputes. Two new tools will be presented in this talk that will help
both avoid and resolve such disputes. The first is the new “ASCE Standard to Identify, Quantify, and Prove Loss of Productivity Claims”. The CPM Conference audience
will have a “sneak peak” of this new protocol, which is the first such document to achieve ANSI Standard designation. We will also introduce the new, powerful “Build

TUE21 - SUSPEND WORK and “..REMAIN ON STANDBY..”
The contract has been awarded and notice to proceed issued. Work has started. The owner issues a suspension of work directive and the contractor shuts down all or
a designated portion of the work awaiting the owner’s return to work order. The contractor believes they are entitled to recover all delay and all time related delay
damages. Is the contractor right? The owner is liable for the delay damages, right? As Max E. Greenberg commented in 1984 – “It ain’t necessarily so!” We will examine
why owners should have a Suspension of Work clause in contracts and how these clauses work. It identifies what damages are typically owed when an owner suspends all
or part of the work and outlines some typical limitations of suspension damages found in many contracts. Additionally, the paper discusses five key court cases decided
between 1996 and 2015 that establish the key requirements necessary to collect damages arising from a suspension of work directive. Finally, the paper offers
recommendations on what actions contractors should take to protect the recovery of such damages and why these actions may help owners resolve such claims in the field
rather than the court.

WED21 - The Nuts and Bolts of Collapsed As Built
While Collapsed As-Built analysis has not enjoyed the same popularity and acceptance as other methods, there are still situations where it is a viable choice for
the analyst. While AACE International’s Recommended Practice 29R-03 defines the process and the expectations of analyst performance, its description of each step of
the procedure is general in nature. Additionally, because Collapsed As-Built analysis is not as widely used as Windows or Additive methods, there is not a wealth of
material available to the analyst performing such an analysis for the first time. This presentation will outline practical methods for preparing a pre-collapsed model
from an As Built schedule; for dealing with out of sequence progress; and for making a staged collapse to determine relative impact of differing issues.

WED33 - Schedule Simulation – The Lego Experience
4D scheduling is not easy, and the multitude of other project requirements can be difficult to meet. If the project team is given a 4D schedule they might not be aware
of how to use it, and many of the people who create 4D schedules do not have experience in using them. During this session, Lego Blocks will be used to simulate a 4D
experience and to demonstrate the benefits of an active 4D process over traditional scheduling. The participants will have to maintain quality, schedule and scope
while building their structure. Please bring your laptop, so you can actually use the models to build. After the session, participants will have a better understanding
of how 4D, BIM and Lean are incorporated into traditional practices, how they can improve project performance, why it can be difficult for teams to adopt new practices,
and what can be done to improve our VDC practices. All this, while playing with Legos!!

WED35 - Modeling how Project Managers Typically React to Schedule Overruns
It is common to find that project owners, contractors and managers react to prospective schedule overruns by adding resources to try to make up time. This behavior
leads to more cost overruns as it moderates (hopefully) the schedule overruns. However, analysts typically model the current plan as if the manager will not react
if the schedule is jeopardized. This is not realistic. When simulating a project schedule the analyst needs to have a way to represent the manager’s response to delays
at the beginning or during execution, when there is still time to preserve the schedule. Conditional branching can represent the project manager’s response to a
schedule event such as the detailed engineering’s ending later than anticipated. Unless this can seamlessly be translated to a schedule overrun without penalty,
something must be done.
During a Monte Carlo simulation conditional branching can test for missing a detailed engineering finish date. Depending on that test, a branch of the schedule that
models the management decision as anticipated is chosen. In the case study, a conditional branch is modeled with 2 possible plans. “Plan A” is the original schedule,
“Plan B” has schedule logic and more resources than Plan A, leading to a somewhat shorter execution schedule. Using Conditional Branching, if the condition is met
(detailed engineering finishes more than 1 month longer than planned) then Plan A is disabled, leaving the recovery Plan B to be followed. If the condition is not met,
then Plan B is disabled leaving the baseline Plan A in place. The richness of the possible responses to schedule risk events will be discussed.

Dilemma of the Prospective Time Impact Analysis
The CPM schedule is frequently perceived, not as a tool to manage a project, but as a sword to attack and a shield to defend during disputes between Owners and
Contractors. This perception comes to light during the submission and evaluation of prospective (forward-looking) time impact analyses (TIAs) for extension of the
contract performance period as the result of delay. While the timely processing of time extensions is essential to good project management, the submission of a
prospective time impact analysis (TIA) highlights many differences between contractors and owners in their perception of delay, concurrency, and equitable adjustment.
This session will pick up where the AACE 2019 Great Debate: The Contract Schedule – Owners vs. Contractors left off: with a contractor’s scheduling manager and an
owner’s representative discussing and comparing their interests, goals, actions, and approach to preparing and evaluating TIAs. This debate will include such topics
as timely time extensions, estimated impacts (fragnets), TIA methodology, actual progress, concurrency and pacing. Although presented in the format of a debate, the
goal of this session is not to determine a winner, but to observe differences and reach agreement (or at least an understanding) surrounding shared goals and viable
solutions that benefit both parties. The continuing theme of these debates is that a properly utilized CPM schedule is a tool – not a contest – that should serve the
interests of both owner and contractor.
