MON16 - The Parallel Application of Change Management and Project Management in Construction Projects
Change Management should run parallel to project management, but often it does not. Prosci developed the ADKAR model for Change Management. It’s similar in many
ways to the process areas of the PMBOK, but it focuses on people rather than execution, monitoring and control of scope.
Since change and adjustment are constant in the construction environment, there are tangible benefits for an organization in applying the ADKAR process to the
construction project management process. In order for organizational change to happen, individuals must change. And an organization that has a strong platform for
change will effect change more efficiently, and therefore perform better.

and Charlie Jackson, Vice President of Project Life Span, LLC.
Many Contract Documents are now requiring the use of the latest version of Primavera software (P6™) due to its enterprise capabilities and its use of latest
technologies including the capabilities to interact other software applications; therefore it is important for the Scheduler to understand how to use this
software most efficiently in their battle to complete their projects in a timely manner.
Primavera’s latest release of P6™ contains many features that can assist in developing schedules quickly and efficiently. However, a new or in-experienced user
would be overwhelmed in the struggle to prepare the schedule using P6™ and these advanced features without proper training or “Basic Training”.
This session will focus on the presenters’ experiences and their lessons learned regarding the effective use of P6 ™ in the schedule development process as they

using MSP on construction projects find that MSP is fine for planning the work but very difficult to use when maintaining the status and accurately

MON25 - Avoiding Defects, Delays & Damages with BIM and 4D Scheduling
For decades the construction industry has accepted disputes as a fact of life; but no longer. BRG started using the power of 4D to analyze when and why things went

MON32 - Schedule Risk Analysis doesn’t have to be hard!
All too often Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) is only performed because it was required for a proposal. Once the contract is won SRA goes out the window. Where SRA is
not mandated it may be ignored because it is perceived as a lot of effort for questionable return. This presentation will demonstrate the benefits of using SRA
throughout the project life cycle and show that benefits can be achieved with little additional effort.

MON33 - Planning and Scheduling with MS Project
This is a sharing session. I have been a contract project scheduler for the last 23 years supporting corporate internal clients using MS Project. As a
full time scheduler I’ve had plenty of time to determine the strengths and weaknesses of MS Project and to establish a mode of operation that both optimizes
its value to the client and minimizes the effort needed to do that. The purpose of this session is to share the mechanics and to encourage other schedulers
to share theirs. I make use of MSP’s programmable Custom Fields, Visual Basic macro capability, menu (ribbon) customization capability, and table and view
customization flexibility. Some may find aspects of my approach unorthodox but progress doesn’t happen doing what everyone else does. I’ll be interested in
the observations and suggestions of my peers.

Interfacing 3D Corridor Modelling with TILOS Linear Planning for Mass Haul Optimization in Road and High Speed Rail
Two sessions is one. In the first half of this session Hubert Geier, the developer of TILOS, a leading distance-based linear planning tool, will explore the
interface of 3D corridor modelling from Trimble’s Business Center to TILOS to create and optimize the mass haul planning of material along a corridor. Once
the mass haul plan is optimized in TILOS, it can be connected to any GIS system for plan versus actual during execution in field.
The second half of this session is a case study showing how TILOS mass haul planning is being used on the French High Speed Rail system,

It’s not uncommon for those preparing for, or defending against a construction delay claim, to discover that the project actually has multiple schedules. One set of schedules is inevitably the baseline or as-planned schedule that the contractor submitted along with the update submittals. Kenji Hoshino is considered one of the prime movers of the AACE 29RP-03 recommended practice for analysis of delays. In 2014 Kenji provided a critique of the delay claim methodology recommended in CPM in Construction Management by James O'Brien and Fredric Plotnick. Several of Kenji's suggestions have now been incorporated to the 8th edition of the text recently published. And so Kenji will now review the current edition of the text against the current release of the RP.

Understanding the Schedule - The Challenge of Informed Consent
This presentation looks at the communication challenges associated with communicating controls information in a way that is understood and appreciated by
stakeholders (particularly senior managers) so they can use the information to make informed decisions. Far too many controls professionals make the mistake of
assuming everyone has the same appreciation of ‘simple’ reports generated from various controls tools. The problem with this assumption is the simple fact you have
no idea what is actually being understood by the stakeholder unless you take the trouble to test the assumption. Effective communication gets the right information to
the right person, in a format they can understand so they can use it to make effective decisions.
As George Bernard Shaw once said “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”. Project professionals routinely complain about
the slow pace of decision making and/or the lack of sensible decisions from management and clients - this is entirely understandable if the decision maker feels they
are being denied information needed to make a decision because they do not fully appreciate or understand the information in the format provided. Effective
communication gets the right information to the right person, in a format they can understand so they can use it to make effective decisions.

TUE21 - Retrospective TIAs – Time to Lay Them to Rest?
The power of Time Impact Analysis (TIA) methodology is attested to by its near universal adoption as a preferred method for establishing entitlement to
time extensions during the course of a project using CPM scheduling. AACE’s RP 52R-06 (2006), which provides a detailed explanation of how-to properly
perform this prospective analysis, is further example of Prospective TIA’s importance. Yet, at the same time the Retrospective TIAs continues to pose
significant methodological issues even though it remains a major methodology for determining the delays in a CPM schedule, as reflected in AACE’s RP29R-03
(2011). Questions concerning Retrospective TIA’s accuracy abound as originally reflected in the question I posed in my 2008 AACE presentation on the matter:

Cost loading a schedule for USACE’s QCS/RMS is often a source of much misunderstanding and frustration on the part of the project team and scheduler. An
understanding of the reasons and requirements for cost loading a schedule to support QCS/RMS is of great help. Simply put; understanding the data and structure of the
SDEF File is the first step; understanding the reason for cost loading the schedule is the second reason to understand the SDEF File. The bottom line is; if you want
to be paid for the work performed then you need to cost load your schedule, that is, your schedule becomes the Schedule of Values (SOV) forming the basis of your

Float reduces risk by protecting against delays in network schedules. But who owns it remains a contentious issue. We will discuss the results of a National Science

social decision-making has inspired how to fairly allocate so that the critical participants can reach an evenly low risk level. Simulations validate the new approach.

WED23 - Project Risk Analysis with Risk Events Step by Step
Efficiency of project risk analysis process depends on how project uncertainties are identified and modelled. Uncertainties in task durations and costs can be modelled
using statistical distributions. Uncertainties can also be modelled using discrete risk events (threats, opportunities, or both), which can be assigned to the project
tasks and resources.
This presentation includes step by step process of quantitative risk analysis with risk events. The process starts with risk identification
and recording them using a risk register. The next step is assigning risks to tasks and resources with certain probability and impact. Then the relationship between
risks is identified. This relationship is graphically presented using event chain diagrams. Uncertainties defined by statistical distributions represented unidentified
events or “nose”. The Monte Carlo simulation helps to generate risk adjusted project schedule as well as rank events and event chains. Mitigation and response planning
is conducted for the critical risk events and chains. The next runs of Monte Carlo simulations help to determine efficiency and cost of mitigation efforts. The process
repeated multiple times during project execution based on actual task duration and cost.
