MON00 - Welcome by Fred Plotnick and Jim O'Brien -- and Opening Keynote Sessions:
Need for Tech Societies by Martin Darley Past President AACEi
Leading the Association for Advancement of Cost Engineers International for this past year, Martin Darley has had to navigate tumultuous times and events ranging
from the economic impact of pricing of oil to both real and perceived political turmoil throughout the world. And yet AACEi continues to be the meeting place where
conflicting theories on cost engineering may be debated and recommended practices deemed useful to all sides may be promulgated. Martin will explain why, in these
uncertain times, it is even more necessary than ever to be involved in the process of learning, teaching and joining in these debates.
From CAD to BIM to CPM by Tom Dengenis of Synchro Software
To the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. We're not fond of rules
and we have no respect for the status quo. You can praise us, disagree with us, quote us, disbelieve us, glorify or vilify us. About the only thing you can't do is
ignore us. Because we change things. We invent. We imagine. We explore. We create. We inspire. We push the human race forward. Maybe we have to be crazy. How else can
we stare at an empty computer screen and see the future? Or sit in silence and hear an excited team that’s amazed by the new medium? Or gaze at a empty site in China
and see “The Happiest Place on Earth”? While some may see us as the crazy ones, we see creative power. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change
the world, are the ones who do...– Inspired by Jack Kerouac.
Monday, 9:45 AM to 11:00 AM -- 75 minute session

MON16 - The Parallel Application of Change Management and Project Management in Construction Projects
Change Management should run parallel to project management, but often it does not. Prosci developed the ADKAR model for Change Management. It’s similar in many
ways to the process areas of the PMBOK, but it focuses on people rather than execution, monitoring and control of scope.
Since change and adjustment are constant in the construction environment, there are tangible benefits for an organization in applying the ADKAR process to the
construction project management process. In order for organizational change to happen, individuals must change. And an organization that has a strong platform for
change will effect change more efficiently, and therefore perform better.
Presented by Tim Mather of PMA
MON17 - Mitigating Delay Claims and Scheduling Best Practices
Session addresses Claims and Risk Awareness, specifically as it related to construction scheduling. How to mitigate claims when construction change is inevitable.
Learn about the principle causes of dispute and how to avoid claims as it relates to the project schedule function. Presented by Raquel Shohet, EI, PSP, of Hill

MON21 - Schedule Development Using P6 Professional Download to 1st Report
This session will lead attendees from download of Primavera P6 software from Oracle's website to delivery of the first report to management of the Contractor and
the Owner. This session is taught by two veteran users of P6™, Hannah Schumacher, Managing Consultant for Hill International (www.hillintl.com)
and Charlie Jackson, Vice President of Project Life Span, LLC.
Many Contract Documents are now requiring the use of the latest version of Primavera software (P6™) due to its enterprise capabilities and its use of latest
technologies including the capabilities to interact other software applications; therefore it is important for the Scheduler to understand how to use this
software most efficiently in their battle to complete their projects in a timely manner.
Primavera’s latest release of P6™ contains many features that can assist in developing schedules quickly and efficiently. However, a new or in-experienced user
would be overwhelmed in the struggle to prepare the schedule using P6™ and these advanced features without proper training or “Basic Training”.
This session will focus on the presenters’ experiences and their lessons learned regarding the effective use of P6 ™ in the schedule development process as they
apply to the Planning and Scheduling development processes. The Scheduler should be able to apply the implementation and execution “Lessons Learned” outlined in
this presentation to develop schedules quickly and efficiently using P6™.
MON22 - PMWeb Change Management by Jon McNatty
MON23 - Really Understanding Microsoft Project
Love it or hate it, Microsoft Project (MSP) CPM scheduling software is here to stay. Many construction contracts are now mandating its use. Most people
using MSP on construction projects find that MSP is fine for planning the work but very difficult to use when maintaining the status and accurately
forecasting project completion.
The good news is that you can ‘make’ MSP properly reflect complicated status including out-of-sequence progress resembling Retained Logic. The Great News is
that in this fourth-generation presentation, we finally made understanding easy. This advanced presentation will explain how to best use MSP in place of P6
or other more status-oriented scheduling software.
Presented by Ron Winter, PSP,
author of Schedule Analyzer Software, and Vera Lovejoy.
MON24 - Introduction to Asta Powerproject Schedule Tool for Planners
An introduction to how Asta Powerproject makes scheduling easier and more cost effective. Come take a look why Asta Powerproject is quickly being adopted
across the entire USA. Every construction company wants to “share” licenses, Asta listened and is the only construction specific scheduling software to offer
concurrent licensing. See why large and small construction companies such as Saunders Construction, Encore Electric and PCShave improved performance, gained
widespread use and reduced training costs by turning to Asta Powerproject. Come see how everyday scheduling functionality can be accomplished with Asta
Powerproject’s unique “drag & drop” functionality. We will show you how Asta Powerproject is really easy to use, easy to learn, powerful and more reliable
than other software for construction scheduling. We will also present an overview of the Enterprise version which gives real-time multi-user collaboration
across all projects and teams.
Presented by Wendy Corrigan, Project Integration - Asta Authorised Reseller & Trainer
Visit the Asta stand (13-14) beforehand and make a guess as to how long it takes for “you” to install Asta Powerproject & you could
walk away with a free license of Asta Powerproject if you attend this session. This is an incredible $1500 value & the emphasis is on you installing
Asta Powerproject. It is that easy!
MON25 - Avoiding Defects, Delays & Damages with BIM and 4D Scheduling
For decades the construction industry has accepted disputes as a fact of life; but no longer. BRG started using the power of 4D to analyze when and why things went
wrong on projects- clients love it, adverse parties cringe when they see it. 4D tells a story quickly and accurately, in a way that is easily understood by anyone.
The real benefit to the industry though is using 4D to identify and resolve problems in the planning stage thereby reducing, or altogether eliminating defects, delays
and damages. By using 4D in the planning phase, improvements can be made in the safety, productivity and reliability of projects.
Presented by Ben D Nolan III PE PSP of Berkeley Research Group, LLC.
MON26 - When Contractor Schedules Go Opaque
Most contracts provide for the Contractor to submit a planned sequence of work, and most of those provide for the contractor to update the schedule to
show progress. But what do you do when the Contractor fails to submit an update, or submits an update that doesn't clearly show the Contractor's performance
or impacts to the plan?
Presented by Thomas Long, Chief of Schedule Controls, NYC Environmental Protection.
MON27 - TBD
MON28 - Oracle Primavera One-on-One Clinic
Two 30 minute sessions to clinic with a representative from CBA, a Oracle Primavera Partner, for One-on-One assistance.

MON31 - Schedule Updating Using P6 Professional NTP to 1st Update Report
This session will lead attendees in the proper use of Oracle Primavera P6 EPPM from Notice-to-Proceed (or acceptance of the initial baseline schedule)
to delivery of the first update report to management of the Contractor and the Owner. This session is taught by two veteran users of P6™,
Hannah Schumacher, Managing Consultant for Hill International (www.hillintl.com) and
Charlie Jackson, Vice President of Project Life Span, LLC.
Many Contract Documents are now requiring the use of the latest version of Primavera software (P6™) due to its enterprise capabilities and its use of latest

MON32 - Schedule Risk Analysis doesn’t have to be hard!
All too often Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) is only performed because it was required for a proposal. Once the contract is won SRA goes out the window. Where SRA is
not mandated it may be ignored because it is perceived as a lot of effort for questionable return. This presentation will demonstrate the benefits of using SRA
throughout the project life cycle and show that benefits can be achieved with little additional effort.
Presented by John Owen, COO of Barbecana Inc.
MON33 - Planning and Scheduling with MS Project
This is a sharing session. I have been a contract project scheduler for the last 23 years supporting corporate internal clients using MS Project. As a
full time scheduler I’ve had plenty of time to determine the strengths and weaknesses of MS Project and to establish a mode of operation that both optimizes
its value to the client and minimizes the effort needed to do that. The purpose of this session is to share the mechanics and to encourage other schedulers
to share theirs. I make use of MSP’s programmable Custom Fields, Visual Basic macro capability, menu (ribbon) customization capability, and table and view
customization flexibility. Some may find aspects of my approach unorthodox but progress doesn’t happen doing what everyone else does. I’ll be interested in
the observations and suggestions of my peers.
Presented by Ed Mahler, PMP, of the Project Administration Institute, www.paiwebsite.com
MON34 - Introduction to Micro Planner X-Pert v3.5.1

the mass haul plan is optimized in TILOS, it can be connected to any GIS system for plan versus actual during execution in field.
The second half of this session is a case study showing how TILOS mass haul planning is being used on the French High Speed Rail system,
presented by Fabien Gaboriauthe leading linear rail planner in France and Switzerland.
MON36 - Planning Planet Guild Town Hall
Q & A on Planning Planet's Guild and Guidelines
MON37 - Ghost Schedules Benefits and Pitfalls by Jim Zack
It’s not uncommon for those preparing for, or defending against a construction delay claim, to discover that the project actually has multiple schedules. One set of schedules is inevitably the baseline or as-planned schedule that the contractor submitted along with the update submittals. However, the second and sometimes even third, set of schedules uncovered and previously unknown to other project participants are often referred to as Ghost Schedules.
MON38 - Oracle Primavera One-on-One Clinic

MON44 - Take Control with Safran Project
Achieving real effective control of complex projects is a complex activity in itself – requiring an integrated approach that understands the relationship between
many variables - such as effective initial planning; Scope change; the impact of Risk; Earned Value; and effective status updating. All these moving parts are often
addressed with the support of several non integrated processes and applications.
Come see how Safran Project can give you real control of your project execution. From initial planning, setting the baseline to status collection and reporting.

on the schedule.
Presented by Henry Stenberg, Topcon Positioning Systems
MON46 - SELLING EFFECTIVELY IN THE NEW ECONOMY
Succeed by De-Commoditizing Yourself
That’s right it is not a down economy it is a new economy. If you are waiting for things to pick up and get back to normal … it will be a long wait. In the last 5 years the economy has taken some major hits: the unwinding of the real estate bubble, slowest economic recovery in 70 years and business uncertainty and worry over the looming debt crisis. This has created a new selling environment. It is much tougher out there than any time in the last 30 years. Many salespeople are struggling in this new sales environment because:
- Sales techniques they are using were designed for another era
- They have self-limiting beliefs that get in their way and render the sales techniques they do know to be ineffective.
- How to differentiate and de-commoditize yourself
- How to effectively and professionally eliminate competition
- How to command higher prices
- How to stop wasting time with prospects who are not qualified
- Why your mindset and is the most important part of selling your service
MON47 - Review of O'Brien-Plotnick Delay Claim Methodology by Kenji Hoshino
Kenji Hoshino is considered one of the prime movers of the AACE 29RP-03 recommended practice for analysis of delays. In 2014 Kenji provided a critique of the delay claim methodology recommended in CPM in Construction Management by James O'Brien and Fredric Plotnick. Several of Kenji's suggestions have now been incorporated to the 8th edition of the text recently published. And so Kenji will now review the current edition of the text against the current release of the RP.

TUE16 - Business of CPM Track
Understanding the Schedule - The Challenge of Informed Consent
This presentation looks at the communication challenges associated with communicating controls information in a way that is understood and appreciated by
stakeholders (particularly senior managers) so they can use the information to make informed decisions. Far too many controls professionals make the mistake of
assuming everyone has the same appreciation of ‘simple’ reports generated from various controls tools. The problem with this assumption is the simple fact you have
no idea what is actually being understood by the stakeholder unless you take the trouble to test the assumption. Effective communication gets the right information to
the right person, in a format they can understand so they can use it to make effective decisions.
As George Bernard Shaw once said “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”. Project professionals routinely complain about
the slow pace of decision making and/or the lack of sensible decisions from management and clients - this is entirely understandable if the decision maker feels they
are being denied information needed to make a decision because they do not fully appreciate or understand the information in the format provided. Effective
communication gets the right information to the right person, in a format they can understand so they can use it to make effective decisions.
Presented by Dr. Lynda Bourne
TUE17 - How to Promote Collaboration between IT and Project Teams
How many times have you been in class or discussion where IT becomes the root of discussions? Both users and management tend to express frustration when talking
about software, hardware, upgrades and incident management with their IT department. On the other hand, IT also faces challenges with inadequate information or
requirements from their end users. Most of the time it focuses on communication, or lack thereof. Most implementation failures are caused by a lack of simple
communication, such as listening skills, understanding perspective and goals. This session is your chance to gain access to an IT Professional that was formerly a
project manager in the field managing projects that has many successes in bridging the gap between IT and the project team.
Presented by Maha Rifai Harrison, PMP, LEED AP, Manager, System Solutions / Information Technology for Hill International

TUE21 - Retrospective TIAs – Time to Lay Them to Rest?
The power of Time Impact Analysis (TIA) methodology is attested to by its near universal adoption as a preferred method for establishing entitlement to
time extensions during the course of a project using CPM scheduling. AACE’s RP 52R-06 (2006), which provides a detailed explanation of how-to properly
perform this prospective analysis, is further example of Prospective TIA’s importance. Yet, at the same time the Retrospective TIAs continues to pose
significant methodological issues even though it remains a major methodology for determining the delays in a CPM schedule, as reflected in AACE’s RP29R-03
(2011). Questions concerning Retrospective TIA’s accuracy abound as originally reflected in the question I posed in my 2008 AACE presentation on the matter:
“Retrospective TIAs – Time to Lay Them to Rest?” After nearly five decades of use this article presents a case as to why TIA’s are still amongst the best
and worst forensic delay methodologies. It poses the question if their Retrospective use should be sharply restricted due to its defects and alternatives
available to the expert analyst.
Presented by John Livengood, FAACE, President-Elect, AACE International
TUE22 - Reviewing Resource Leveled Schedules using P6
Standard CPM schedule review techniques are insufficient to review automatically resource leveled schedules. We will discuss ways to effectively review such
schedules that can be used on construction projects utilizing an Oracle/Primavera P6 Professional. There are a large number of issues and guidelines to be considered
when evaluating an automatically resource leveled CPM schedule.
Presented by Ron Winter, PSP
TUE23 - Deltek Acumen Fuse: The Truth about Schedule Quality

TUE24 - EVM versus cost loading for USACE's QCS/RMS (Understanding the SDEF File)
Cost loading a schedule for USACE’s QCS/RMS is often a source of much misunderstanding and frustration on the part of the project team and scheduler. An
understanding of the reasons and requirements for cost loading a schedule to support QCS/RMS is of great help. Simply put; understanding the data and structure of the
SDEF File is the first step; understanding the reason for cost loading the schedule is the second reason to understand the SDEF File. The bottom line is; if you want
to be paid for the work performed then you need to cost load your schedule, that is, your schedule becomes the Schedule of Values (SOV) forming the basis of your
monthly progress payments. This session will, provide a basic understanding of the requirements for cost loading a schedule and an understanding of the data in the
SDEF File that will allow you to get paid.
Presented by David Long
TUE25 - Visio by Microsoft - Professional Flow Chart & Diagram Software

TUE31 - Litigation Track - Is Comparative Fault Available in a Construction Contract Claim?
When parties come at odds in a construction project—i.e., owner versus general contractor/general contractor versus subcontractor—litigation claims often
arise that sound in both contract and in tort/negligence. The question then becomes whether a defendant in a breach of contract suit can assert the
comparative fault of the plaintiff suing it (or the contributory fault of others) to lessen its exposure. The state of the law on this issue will be
examined.
Presented by Martha Y. Curtis of Sher Garner Cahill Richter Klein & Hilbert, L.L.C.
TUE32 - Advanced Application of BIM for Project Controls
STV’s BIM 456 initiative utilizes technology, beyond that currently utilized by our peers, in the AEC industry and Building Information Management (BIM) practices
to deliver value throughout the complete life-cycle of the project. STV’s representatives will address the benefit of utilizing BIM applications for project controls
from design management, through pre-construction and construction to facilities management and operation. The session will address the use of BIM, and interoperable
software, to increase the efficiency and accuracy of cost estimating, managing project scope, measuring construction productivity levels, analyzing project progress,
schedule development and analysis, forensic analysis and cost control, by the linking of individual tools within the platform.
Presented by Dareen Salama of STV
TUE33 - Deltek Acumen Risk: The Rewards of Schedule Risk Analysis
CPM schedules are excellent at providing a completion forecast based on the planned duration and sequence of work. However, they fall short in accounting
for external risk events – those discrete events that have an impact on a project execution teams' ability to execute the plan. This presentation focuses on
the second step towards improving project maturity: identifying and reducing project risk exposure through project risk analysis. Learn best practices when

TUE35b - 4D Solutions: Improving Transportation Through Better Information
This presentation will discuss the fundamentals of 4D Scheduling and the value of its use in heavy highway and bridge construction projects. Through this
innovative process, owners are enhancing their designs prior to construction and bridging the gap between the planned schedule and how it’s actually built.
Learn how these easy-to-understand graphical representations are improving project understanding and can be utilized at any project stage – ideally during
conceptual design. Presenter will walk through the 4D process, the technology used, and will highlight several projects where 4D has saved months of
construction time and up to 10x the cost of the service.
Presented by David Giardino, Owner & President, Turino Group Incorporated.
TUE36 - Building Schedules to Maximize Communication
A frequent challenge we see with schedule development on one-of-a-kind engineered projects is either too much detail being defined in the schedule and schedules
collapse under their own weight or the schedule doesn’t have enough detail to provide the Owner with a feeling that the Project Team is in control. These types of
projects create a unique challenge when creating schedules and reports that meet all project stakeholder information needs. As with most anything that has competing
requirements the answer often lies somewhere in the middle. In this presentation you will learn scheduling techniques to manage schedule development to achieve a
level of detail we call “Just Enough”.
Presented by Warren Krueger of Loadspring Solutions
TUE37a - Who Should Own Float? Mitigating Delays by Float-Preallocation Method
Float reduces risk by protecting against delays in network schedules. But who owns it remains a contentious issue. We will discuss the results of a National Science
Foundation-funded research on allocating project float – between the sum of raw durations and the contract deadline – to the critical path. A mathematical model from
social decision-making has inspired how to fairly allocate so that the critical participants can reach an evenly low risk level. Simulations validate the new approach.

TUE43 - Five Steps to Schedule Maturity with Deltek Acumen
Think of project planning as a three-legged stool. We've already improved the quality of our schedule (leg 1), improved accuracy by accounting for risk
(leg 2), now we'll take a look at the third key element to successful project planning: accurate resource planning. A resource loaded schedule is the perfect
marriage between the work required to complete the project and the resources needed to complete the work. This presentation focuses on best practices for
achieving this harmony and why it's important to remove the traditional silos between cost forecasting and scheduling and learn how Deltek Cobra and PM
Compass can make this a reality!

TUE46 - The Ten Best Ways to Promote a Collaborative Project Environment
Projects run more smoothly and successfully when the project team works in a collaborative approach using project controls-oriented project management. This approach helps prevent distrust, reduces letter battles, and eliminates confrontational meetings, and creates a transparent project management atmosphere on the project. With the need to make money in a tight market, the Contractor will quickly fall into a defensive posture if the Owner or Construction Manager become concerned about claims or perceived claims positioning, even if those are simply reactions to Contractor actions or notifications. Authors Chris Carson, FAACE, PSP, CEP, DRMP, CCM, PMP, ARCADIS U.S., Inc. and Glen R. Palmer, PSP, CFCC, GR Palmer Consulting Services, LLC will discuss ten best ways to promote the collaborative environment that minimizes the risk of confrontational or defensive attitudes, and keeps the team working together throughout the project.
TUE47 - Using TF vs Longest Path When & Where for Each
In determining the Critical Path on construction projects, it is traditionally preferred to use the Longest Path Calculation. However, on complex projects the
Longest Path may not apply, be accurate or show the true Critical Path to the projects contractual milestone completion dates / obligations. In these instances it
may be necessary to analyze critical activities using total float. Often times, Penalties, LD’s, multiple constraints, Interim milestones and calendars can affect
this decision. This presentation will explain example cases where it is appropriate to use Longest Path versus Total Float and provide some tips for identifying and
tracking the Critical Path in each case.

WED23 - Project Risk Analysis with Risk Events Step by Step
Efficiency of project risk analysis process depends on how project uncertainties are identified and modelled. Uncertainties in task durations and costs can be modelled
using statistical distributions. Uncertainties can also be modelled using discrete risk events (threats, opportunities, or both), which can be assigned to the project
tasks and resources.
This presentation includes step by step process of quantitative risk analysis with risk events. The process starts with risk identification
and recording them using a risk register. The next step is assigning risks to tasks and resources with certain probability and impact. Then the relationship between
risks is identified. This relationship is graphically presented using event chain diagrams. Uncertainties defined by statistical distributions represented unidentified
events or “nose”. The Monte Carlo simulation helps to generate risk adjusted project schedule as well as rank events and event chains. Mitigation and response planning
is conducted for the critical risk events and chains. The next runs of Monte Carlo simulations help to determine efficiency and cost of mitigation efforts. The process
repeated multiple times during project execution based on actual task duration and cost.
